Door won't stay closed

Postby denopolis23 on Fri Dec 19, 2008 5:40 pm

I know this sounds like nothing, but I have a door in my basement that goes to our laundry room that will not stay closed. I have no idea of who's opening it, but I have made a point to close it at night and when I look at it in the morning, it is open again. This is currently happening, but about a year or so ago, I used to hear it slam shut at night. This happened for quite a while, but hasn't in at least a year. I just wonder what the hell is going on down there.

Have you tried hanging out down there about the time it happens? You can try putting a video camera down there, or a digital audio recorder.

First, eliminate the explanation of a draft caused by the dryer or an air/heating unit cycling on/off. Next, check any windows that may exist to make sure they are not leaking and causing a draft in windy conditions. The camera monitor suggestion is a good one. Digital voice recorder is also a good suggestion. Expansion/ contraction of your home MIGHT cause gravity to 'get ahold' of the door, but slamming shut is highly unlikely in this scenario. Happy hunting...

Great points, folks. If it were me, I'd take a cooler full of beer down there, pull up an easy chair, and just wait for whatever happened to happen...LOL. But, if you have sense, which would be much unlike me, I'd place the camcorder (if you have one) as was mentioned earlier and just wait. Then you'll have some video of the cause. As Blaise correctly said, contraction and expansion of the building could easily cause the door to open slightly. It would probably take a decent gust of wind to slam the door, so there either is a draft down there, or possibly a suction caused whenever the heating or cooling unit kicks on that may be the culprit.
