OH! You guys have no idea how much I love discussing theory... So many people out there just end up running in
circles because they just want evidence. Well, that does you know good if you can't use that information to formulate some kind of idea from. So this is perfect... love this stuff, ok...
#1. What do you think ghosts are?
For this question you really have start to define your terms. For this we can say that there is a difference in what we're calling a 'ghost' and someone who has passed, or 'the passed on'. Not saying that people that are passed cannot return or communicate to some extent in the
realm of the living, but generally speaking, the passed on are not trapped, stuck, tied down to any person place or thing for any reason. The passed on have a certain level of etheral freedom which may differ from being to being and we will probably never understand that while we're still living. Ghosts, are the opposite of the passed on. They generally are tied down to a person, place or thing for one reason or another and do lack that level of etheral freedom, whether by choice or not, and tend to often be distraught at their
existence or simply not aware. Thats where I differ than most people when they catergorize hauntings, I don't like to do that. A general idea of the
intelligent versus residual hauntings I think are flawed. I think that the residual aspects of certain hauntings are just a
reflection of the ghost's lack of awareness of their existence. Imagine being in a daze or under the influence of something. Not totally aware of what or why but you always still manage to do what you normally do to a certain extent. Another idea I disagree with is one that stems from pop culture and our inability to understand. Most people think that ghosts are just like Patrick Swazye, watching everything go by unable to affect it only by doing little things here and there. I tend to think that ghosts are only able to sense in similar ways that we sense them. Thats why its so difficult to communicate them. To what extent this works, I'm not really sure. But I think there are these
dimensional lapses that occur, caused by them perhaps or by other reasons, that allows us to
detect them with our physical senses, and record them on certain media. Why they haven't become part of the 'passed on' is a discussion that has always been more popular and we all have heard most of the theories. I haven't formulated one my self that works better than the other ones I've heard. I don't really think its up to me to help an
entity 'pass on'... personally I think its somewhat irresponsible (how to we help someone we can barely communicate with go to a place we know absolutely nothing about?).
#2. What do we need to invent that will help us determine and or capture a ghost on film?
I think there is alot to be said in the area of the near infra-red
spectrum (different than thermal, behaves just like red, green, blue, and UV) that alot of people, like Patrick Burns, are doing work in at the moment. Both video and digital still
cameras are sensitive to NIR at different levels (hold a TV remote up to one and look through the viewfinder while you're pushing buttons). Ever wonder why we get things on video and photos that we couldn't see with the naked eye at the time? Thats a possible reason. Also, another question that we still need to answer before we can answer this one; do apparitions and manifestations radiate, reflect, or refract light? Depending on how they deal with light or lack of will help us determine better ways to document the activity when they do. They may do only one, all three, or different ways for different reasons.
#3. What do we need to invent that will help us communicate with a ghost directly?
Technically speaking, I'm not sure... There are problems with all the devices that currently exist. The main one is the human subconscious effect on the outcome. The best way to eliminate that is
seperate the human element from the device as much as possible. Usually, in turn this eliminates alot of the possible positive results. Does this mean the ones before were subconscious shout outs from th back of our minds or that the human piece of the puzzle makes these things work? You're guess is as good as mine. Also our ability to
interpret received messages through different devices like EVP from audio recorders, the
output from devices like a Frank's Box, and most of the other forms of
instrumental transcommunication are subject to what alot of people call 'matrixing', a term I never heard before I watched Ghost Hunters... so I like to use the clinical term, "apophenia" - which is is the experience of seeing patterns or
connections in random or meaningless data, according to wikipedia. Its just natural for people to see human faces in randomness and hear voices in randomness simply because of the social
creatures we are... our
survival has depended on that since the beginning. Thats something thats almost completely impossible to eliminate, so its one we'll have to deal with. AND I'm still just talking out receiving messages... not even transmitting. If you're really into trying to communicate, real time two way... a
psychic or sensitive is still the best method we have and believe me I know as much as everyone else that this is still very flawed. So as far as inventing a device, I think we need to nail down the cause of EVP as solid as we can before we really move on into that. EVP is still our most reliable, most definitive form of
gathering information that we have and THAT, is going to be the key for developing communcation. We just aren't quite there yet.
MAN that was alot... but I really get into these sort of discussions. These are the kinds of things that I
rack my brain on when I'm driving or in the shower so I love any chance I get to actually put them down and have people counterpoint.
