I think it's pretty commonplace for larger societies. The reason is that there are some tax advantages to filing this way, because equipment that is bought can be depreciated if it's used for a non-profit organization, and expenses for travel can be deducted, etc. Secondly, believe it or not, you can apply for federal grants to help with equipment purchases, travel, etc. Thirdly, if the society is incorporated, there is protection for
individual members if someone who represents themselves as being from your society goes out and burns somebody's house down trying to hunt a ghost, they won't be able to sue each member of the society for damages. And, lastly, if a society accepts donations, then it's a tax write-off for those who donate. The reason we're considering it is not so much for the money part of this, since we aren't in the practice of asking for donations, and the equipment we have is purchased by either myself or Grim, since we charge no fees, and charge no members for
membership fees. It's just to have something in place for the future should this expand to bigger things. What those things are, we don't know, but at least we'll be
prepared for it just in case.
