The reason you see those is that the air has different densities at different temps, and the light bends slightly as it passes from one density to another.

I wonder if you can use a laser to help confirm a cold spot in that manner...hmm.

my guess is that the level of accuracy needed to detect changes like we need, which seem relatively small to effect a light source, might be pretty expensive.

Exactly... We do not need anything supper accurate. Just basic layout of the facility and surrounding buildings in which we will be investigating. I would imagine that each floor will be the same, so what in addition to the floors do we need to keep in mind?

As long as it isn't like an Escher drawing, it will probably be useful.

That was precisely what I was going to try, Jeremy. I have Google Earth, and I can get a fairly clear view of the building. Give it a go and see what you can come up with, and I'll do the same on this end. The floor plans are very similar except for the first and fifth floor, which has some differences. Still, we can stage folks with using this kind of drawing. THANKS!!

Ha, it looks like i could have read Jeremy's post better. Ok, lets see if we can get some basic outlines of the building and start from there.

I'll work on it later on today. Jeremy, if you can give it a shot as well, maybe between the two of us we'll get something that works.

Here is a rudimentary layout I did of the Waverly Building and the area surrounding it for your use. You may download it from this link:

Great, thanks! I'm getting very anxious about this trip! I've never been there. All packed up and ready to go.

here are the two maps I came up with... unfortunately I made a rookie mistake and didn't make the symbols graphic, so depending on what fonts your computer has they make look different. Either way, they're still usable.

Those are great, Jeremy. Thanks!! I tried to do some measurements on mine, if you want to incorporate them into yours.

definitely... and first print is a rough draft. tomorrow I'll go back in and fix all the errors then add in some new things like scale bars, maybe make the grid more to scale. if you or anyone else has any ideas make sure to hit me up, i can do just about anything with it.

for example, if anyone uses GPS I can add in a geographic coordinate grid, or any coordinate system for that matter.

I'm working on creating outlines for the internal layouts, however without ever venturing inside, I am unsure as to how the different wings are labeled. Also, I do not know the internal layout. I will upload them and perhaps those who have been in there can help out with a rough inside sketch. I can clean it up later. I will upload what I have in just a little bit.

That will be great, Stew. We'll take a look and see what we can remember and help you out.

Ok, here is a very very rough diagram of the ground floor. I would like to create something like this for each floor so we can better plan logistics. But I need some help with how the floors are actually laid out. Do we know how many rooms on a floor? How the central wing looks? I assume the the opposing wings are all dormitories, but what is the central area? All, I'm working on is the overview.

Take the image and make some notes...
