Waverly Death Toll - ???

Waverly trip planning

Thanks, it started out as searching through microfilms just to find new names to add to the memorial. But it didn't take long to see a patern that showed that the legendary figures weren't right.
It's amazing how much you can learn about things that others claim can't be looked into.

Exactly! I'm all for when long held beliefs are challenged. I think alot of us are just plain investigators at heart. Whether it is paranormal or not, always questioning is very beneficial.

I already know about the earth. I've been a charter member of the flat earth society for close to 10 years now.

our motto:

"don't be ridiculous...it's flat like a coin, or a beer bottle cap"

Kind of like how the suicide legend turn out when looked at realisticly.
502 was a patients bathroom NOT a nurses station.
The patients on the 5th floor were ambulatory and close to going home, not mental patients, nor were they locked in ther wards.
The legend, how and why it happened, or even when it happened keeps changing. Seems like if someone knew they facts or had documentation, at least SOME of the story would stay the same.
And to top it all,
the pipe above the door that legend says is where she was hung from in the 1920s or 1930s is part of the sprinkler system that wasn't installed until the 70s.
Just doesn't hold water.

Some of the other long standing, well accepted legends that I've proven false are:
The bleeding room, and the electric shock therapy room.
So I always recomend that people NOT believe legends unless the teller can provide documentation to prove it is true. And I learned the hard way that something on TV that claims to be "based on a true story" is in no way obligated to verify how true it really is.

Wow...did *ANYTHING* happen there?

I wonder if/how the owners perpetuate these misconceptions. I think it would be great to include this info with the info for the investigators on on the waverly trip. I'd hate to have people trying to communicate with a 30 year old pipe looking to contact a long dead nurse.

Actually, many of these legends were well established before the Mattinglys bought the place. I trace many of them to around the time when Alberhasky (the owner before the Mattinglys) was holding his "awakening" parties in which they had live bands (incursion 502 graffitti happened at this time) seances etc.
The Mattinglys have their hands full with day to day upkeep, they don't do actual research. They rely on others to share, but some of those who have "provided history" have had ulterior motives and were less then accurate. The Mattinglys, in my oppinion, are at worst guilty of trusting the wrong people. But they had been told these fictional legends for so long that like many people they fell for them and came to believe them.
From what I've been told, when I have shown enough proof, they have instructed their guides to no longer tell the disproven tales anymore, (i.e. the bleeding room and electric shock therapy) so I give them much credit for that. But many of these tales die very hard.
Believe me when I tell you that when I first started exposing actual facts, I was brutally attacked online and ridiculed for being the liar by many locals who believe the legends so much.
Yes, they believe these far fetched stories with absolutely no factual backing or proof, then call the guy with thousands of documents as proof the liar?!? So I don't fault the owners at all for believing like so many others have. He works at a factory and she raised two children and has always been a home maker. They are not historians or building preservation specialists. Just a few normal people trying their best to save a wonderful piece of our history. For this I give them the utmost respect.

Does anybody know if they will be present during the investigation, i wouldn't mind meeting them, they are doing a great service to our field and history, if only the prices were a bit better!

Usually (almost always) at least Tina will be there. But Charlie works a lot of hours so it's hit and miss with him.
And I agree with the prices thing, but one good thing is that it helps keep away the petty thrill seekers who would ruin any investigations going on nearby.

Unfortunately the records for the Woodhaven era is still sealed because not enough time has passed. KY death certificates are only public record from 1911 through 1953 at this time. And since many of the patients were wards of the state, many don't have any family to pass on their stories.
I have interviewed several former staff members from the nursing home years. All seem to be very compassionate and caring people who did the best that they could under the circumstances.
It was a state run facility and under funded under staffed. It seems to be closer to neglect then actual abuse for the most part.
